Professional English Horn reed
Description
Here’s what I aim for in all my reeds:
• Easy response.
• Pleasant tone – not dark, but not bright either, will blend well with an ensemble.
• Stable pitch.
• Tuned to A=440, crowing “C#” octaves, but with a little “rattle” – it’ll be “looser” than an oboe reed.
• Medium to medium-hard strength. I can customize, if you have preferences – just let me know!
I use the following materials:
• Gouged cane, purchased from RDG Woodwinds (I just don’t have an EH gouger yet…someday!).
• Hand-shaped with what I think is a Gilbert -1 shape, but I bought it a long time ago and can’t say for sure. It’s nice. I like it. I hope you do. The octave C’s stay up and the third-space C doesn’t sag, and the low E speaks readily.
• Either a silver or brass staple – it’ll be of professional quality and new, but I use both materials for my own reeds.
• FF nylon thread.
I’ll most likely put a wire on it, because I do that for my own reeds. If you don’t want one, let me know. I do not put plastic tubing on the reed (you know, what we sometimes add to keep the reed attached to the bocal) before sending.
